Pets guide
How EverQuest Legends pet classes work under the one-active-pet rule — warrior base stats, secondary class kits, and pet gear slots.
EverQuest Legends (EQL) allows only one active pet per character — even if your three-class loadout includes Magician, Beastlord, and Shadow Knight simultaneously. Pet class tags determine which summon wins when multiple pet-capable classes share a EQ Legends preset.
Every EverQuest Legends pet uses a Warrior base with Cleave as its AoE threat tool and can wear warrior-usable gear. On top of the warrior skeleton, each pet gains a secondary class identity that unlocks spell lines or behavior changes — elemental stances for Magician pets, warder buffs for Beastlord, undead lifetap for Necromancer, and so on.
This EQ Legends pets guide compares pet classes for solo and group play, explains pet gear slots (four base plus three per pet-class tag), and links ranked combos on the tier list. For three-class rules see the multiclass guide; for race-specific warder questions see the races guide.
Six EverQuest Legends classes interact with pets: Magician, Necromancer, Beastlord, Shaman, Enchanter, and Shadow Knight. Only the first four commonly anchor pet-led EQ Legends solo builds; Enchanter charm creates temporary pets; Shadow Knight undead pets support lifetank trios.
Magician elementals remain the fastest levels 1–10 opener when paired with Cleric secondary — pet tanks while you heal and nuke. Swap to your permanent trio at level 10 without losing passive class XP on unused slots.
Beastlord warder pets scale with melee buffs and hand-to-hand synergy — top searches for half elf beastlord warder and beast lord warder pets half elves land here. Necromancer undead pets excel on DoT-heavy EverQuest Legends routes with lifetap self-sustain.
| Class | Pet type | Tier | EQ Legends role |
|---|---|---|---|
| Magician | Elementals | A | Water/fire/earth/air pets with dual-class bases (e.g. warrior/rogue, warrior/wizard). |
| Necromancer | Undead minion | A | Undead pet plus DoT and lifetap spell lines. |
| Beastlord | Warder | B | Warder pet with warrior/berserker base |
| Shaman | Spirit pet | B | Classic shaman pet line in tri-class pet builds. |
| Enchanter | Charmed NPC | B | Temporary pets via charm |
| Shadow Knight | Undead pet | C | Classic SK pet line for tank/caster combos. |
The universal Warrior base means every EQ Legends pet blocks, taunts with Cleave, and equips plate or chain pet gear when stats allow. This consistency lets you reuse hand-me-down weapons between Magician fire pets and Beastlord warders during early beta.
Secondary class identity changes AI priority: Magician pets may prefer elemental nukes at range; Beastlord warders stay in melee with buffed hand-to-hand; Necromancer pets apply lifetap auras; Shaman spirit pets inherit slow and haste support spells when commanded.
Monster Summoning is the documented exception path — some summoned NPC pets follow different rules than class pets. Treat charm-based Enchanter pets as temporary — they expire when charm breaks, unlike permanent Magician or Beastlord EverQuest Legends companions.
| Pet layer | Function | Tag |
|---|---|---|
| Warrior base | Cleave, taunt, warrior gear | Core |
| Secondary class | Spell lines / AI bias | Identity |
| Pet gear slots | 4 base + 3 per pet tag | Upgrade |
| Player loadout | One active pet max | Rule |

Magician EverQuest Legends pets ship as dual-class elementals — beta examples include warrior/rogue and warrior/wizard bases for mixed melee and spell finishers. Elementals shine in D0–D2 personal instances where pet HP outscales zone damage before your third class unlock.
Pair Magician primary with Cleric secondary for the classic pet-opener: heal your elemental while nuking on the side. At level 10 add Wizard or Rogue third for burst or plate — template on the builds guide.
Necromancer undead pets stack DoTs and lifetap on the same target set. Dark Elf necromancer primaries from Neriak synergize with Shadow Knight third for self-sufficient EQ Legends lifetank presets ranking A-tier on community tier lists.
Beastlord warder pets use warrior or berserker melee bases with beastlord buff spells layered on top. Kerran and Half Elf primaries frequently pair with Shaman or Rogue thirds for slow-plus-melee EverQuest Legends loops — see races guide for Kerran notes.
Warder pets benefit from haste and slow supplied by your player character — Shaman secondary or third is the classic glue. Ranked eq legends pets searches often compare Beastlord versus Magician sustain; Beastlord wins long D3 sessions when pet gear keeps pace.
Shaman spirit pets act as supplemental pets with classic EQ spirit line behavior. In tri-class setups they compete with Magician or Beastlord for the single pet slot — usually Shaman wins only when Magician and Beastlord are absent from the loadout.
| Pet lead class | Best EQ Legends combo glue | Difficulty | Tier |
|---|---|---|---|
| Magician | Cleric / Wizard | D0–D2 farm | A |
| Beastlord | Shaman / Rogue | D2–D4 sustain | A |
| Necromancer | Shadow Knight / Cleric | DoT lifetank | A |
| Shaman spirit | Warrior / Rogue | Utility pet | B |
EQ Legends pets wear four base equipment slots plus three additional slots per pet-class tag on your character. Upgrade pet weapons to +10 with focus and proc lines that mirror player exaltation rules on the exaltation guide.
Maintain separate player and pet gear presets when switching loadouts in city hubs. Linked equipment sets copy both — useful for alt farming, dangerous if your pet still wears D0 gear while you push D4.
Proc lines that boost pet haste or pet crit outperform player-only procs on pet-led EverQuest Legends builds. Farm duplicates in the same instance tier your pet can tank without constant heals.
Community Pre-order Beta rankings — not official EQ Legends balance — generally order pet solo power as: Magician elemental (early speed) ≈ Beastlord warder (mid sustain) > Necromancer undead (DoT control) > Shaman spirit (support) > Enchanter charm (situational).
For plane of sky prep at 46+, pet survivability matters more than raw D0 clear speed. Warrior / Shaman / Rogue templates with no pet dependency often outrank pet classes on D4 — consult the planes guide.

One active pet at a time per character, regardless of how many pet-capable classes are in your three-class loadout.
Yes — pets use warrior-usable equipment with four base slots plus three per pet-class tag on your loadout.
Magician for early leveling speed; Beastlord warder for mid-game sustain; see tier list for full trio rankings.
Half Elf supports Beastlord primary with flexible secondaries — pair with Shaman tools and read the races guide for Kerran alternatives.
EverQuest Legends supports pet attack macros — assign pet hold, pet attack, and pet taunt alongside player Striker or Offensive stance toggles. Beta testers recommend binding pet Cleave moments to Offensive stance windows for maximum EQL threat in personal instances.
Keep heals or lifetap ready when pet AI face-tanks D2+ enemies — pets inherit warrior mitigation but not your plate tier unless gear upgrades keep pace. Cleric secondary remains the safest glue for Magician primaries through Permafrost and Lower Guk.
When charm pets from Enchanter classes break, have a melee fallback rotation — never rely on charm alone for plane keys. For non-pet DPS checks, pivot to templates on the class combo builder.
